The Sussex County Council currently has the authority and the power to deny the ability of offshore wind to come to Delaware, and the five County Councilmen will vote on this very issue at their Tuesday December 17th meeting. The specific vote, will be to allow or to deny, conditional use of land near the Indian River Power Plant to be used as an electric substation to accept the electric power from the foreign owned US Wind's Offshore wind project. If US Wind cannot access the land to bring ashore it's electricity, then it is dead in the water, at least off the coast of Delaware. This project is a Maryland project, and provides no benefit to Delaware residents.
As per Delaware law, a conditional use grant must provide a benefit to Delaware inhabitants, in order to be granted. As Sussex County defines a conditional use, it "must promote the health, safety, morals, convenience, order, prosperity and welfare of the present and future inhabitants of Sussex County, and the conditional use must be for the general convenience and welfare of the inhabitants of Sussex County. " Clearly, there is zero benefit and only detriment to the citizens of Delaware if offshore wind were to come off the coast of Delaware beaches yet benefit Maryland and the foreign owned holding company that purchased this land near the Indian River power plant for US Wind. So what can we the people do?
Email the Sussex County Council Members
The official public comment portion on this topic is now closed, but we can still let the five Sussex County Council members know how we the public still feel about offshore wind coming to the shores of Delaware, and give the council members continued encouragement to vote NO on the conditional use for a substation for US Wind offshore wind. See sample email below.

Dear Sussex Councilmember,
Please vote NO to allow the conditional use of land near the Indian River power plant to be used as a substation for offshore wind. According to federal environmental impact studies U.S. Wind’s proposed turbines will have major negative impact and will:
1) Dominate the entire shoreline view in Delaware and Maryland leading to lost tourism and lower property values.
2) Noise from construction and operations will harass marine life risking extinction of whales and other endangered species.
3) Turbines interfere with radar risking vessel collisions, Coast Guard operations, and reduced military security.
4) Commercial fishermen will abandon fishing in lease areas.
5) The fragile Indian River and Bay will be compromised
The consequences of the proposed use to support offshore wind development does not promote the prosperity, or welfare of present or future inhabitants of Sussex County. The conditional use should be denied.
Sincerely,
Your Name
Home Town
