Referendum to Increase Total Property Tax by 30%

Writer's picture: 38th District Republican Club38th District Republican Club

The 38th District Republican Club will meet today TUESDAY, February 25th, at 6:30pm, at the Millville Community Center on Dukes Road. Our guest speaker will be the Indian River School District Superintendent, Dr. Owens, along with the IRSD Director of Finance Tammy Smith, to address the upcoming IR School District referendum vote to be held on March 20th.

Indian River School District Referendum

If the referendum is approved, it will lead to a 30% increase in total property tax. This is a difficult time to approve a referendum for raising property taxes when property owners are uncertain about whether their current property tax will rise, or by how much if it does. However, homeowners are currently aware of their home's assessed value, as assessments have been mailed to property owners by the Tyler Corporation. Property owners can still contest this assessed value, and many are doing so. Since the total revenue is intended to be "net zero," the exact individual tax rate per property will remain unknown until all reassessments are finalized to maintain this "net zero" status. Nonetheless, we have a fair estimate of what the tax rate is likely to be, which is 20.5 cents per $100,000 of assessed value. The proposed referendum rate increase is expected to add another 6 cents per $100,000 of assessed value.

Therefore, if your home's value was assessed to be $100,000, then your total property tax is likely to be $205. With the new proposed referendum tax increase, the new property tax would be $260.50.

If your home is assessed at $500,000 then the property tax would be $1,025 per year. The referendum would increase the tax to $1,325.

$100,000 $205 $265

$200,000 $405 $530

$300,000 $615 $795

$400,000 $820 $1,060

$500,000 $1,025 $1,325

$600,000 $1,230 $1,590

$700,000 $1,435 $1,855

$800,000 $1,640 $2,120

$900,000 $1,845 $2,385

$1,000,000 $2,050 $2,650

Now it is up to voters to decide if the tax increase is warranted for what the Indian River School District requests and proposes.
